Domaine des Pierres Sèches, Rhone
Sylvain Gauthier is the winemaker and viticulturist at this tiny 6.5 hectare domaine, tucked away in the village of Cheminas behind the hills of the St Joseph appellation. Originally from Alsace, he earned his stripes at Domaine du Tunnel with Stephane Robert and at Chapoutier, but left in 2007 to start his own project.
The wines are gloriously juicy, plush and concentrated and the vineyards are in biodynamic conversion. Only wild yeasts are used, there is no filtration, and sulphur is only used at bottling. The St Joseph wines spend three weeks fermenting followed by 12-18 months in two and three year old oak barrels. The IGP syrah sees only stainless steel. Sylvain is in the process of building a new winery as he acquires new vineyards. We think he is definitely a name to watch.
