Daniel Ramos, Gredos

The Gredos mountains, East of Madrid in the centre of Spain, are a harsh and demanding place to farm, often inaccessible by road and with vines planted at up to 1400 metres, it is little surprise that many of the vineyards lie abandoned.  Daniel Ramos, nicknamed Kapi (el Capitan), however, saw the opportunity this offered to reclaim and revive some of the best vineyards, planted with very old bush vine Garnacha and Albillo Real primarilly on granite soils with the occasional area of schist.  Aussie-born, but raised in Madrid, Ramos practices organic farming and low-intervention in the cellar with native yeasts, no fining or filtration and minimal use of sulphur.
