Glenturret 10 Year Old Peat Smoked 2021 50% Scotland Highlands
Formerly owned by Edrington, where its whisky was mostly directed to filling out the malt component of The Famous Grouse in days gone by, Glenturret occasionally popped up in the portfolios of independent bottlers, but was otherwise unknown. Recently sold off to Lalique, Glenturret has been reborn, and - as you might expect given its new owners - with some pretty gorgeous glass bottles. With Bob Dalgano, formerly of Macallan, taking the helm as Master Blender, we had high hopes for this and we weren't disappointed. This 10 Year Old Peat Smoked bottling has a gentle, mature peat character that's quite different from the more commonly encountered Islay peat. Here the flavour is oily, even kippery, with a lovely complex smokiness underpinning ripe fruit and spice, with peat fire embers and gentle rolling woodsmoke beautifully integrated through the flavour all the way through to the finish. We loved it at first taste. Now bottled at 50%, this is excellent value.
