Cathar(tic) Wines Syracha IGP 2018 Roussillon
Famous for its anchovies and its pretty port more than its wine, Collioure is a subregion of the Roussillon marked out by its powerful, muscular wines, heady with fruit and alcohol. This syrah is no exception, but the schist soils and cooling breezes from the nearby Mediterranean help to keep it in balance. There's admirable freshness about the black fruit and substantial tannins and it doesn't fall prey to the common problem in this part of the world of feeling boozy or shapeless. A great success from Richard Bray, who has worked in these parts for quite a few years now - and it shows.
