Kara Tara Pinot Noir 2020 Durbanville
Rudiger Van Wyck is the winemaker at the luxurious Stark-Conde estate, but this is his side project. Made in the style of Burgundy, with a part of the wine fermented in new oak barrels, this is all made from fruit sourced in Durbanville, fermented with 20% whole bunches and matured with 10% new oak. The result is a striking, rich, expressive pinot noir that has a peppery, savoury backbone. Yet more evidence that South Africa is making some of the finest pinot noir outside Burgundy, and certainly the best value.
