Daniele Dinoia and his wife, Sonia, of Villa Guelpa are trailblazers in Alto Piemonte, Piedmont’s most northerly, subalpine region. The organically farmed vineyards are planted with regional clones of Nebbiolo, along with local specialities Vespolina and Croatina. As a result, the wines are quite distinct from their cousins in Barolo and the Langhe further south, and well worth checking out. Fermented with natural yeasts in concrete, the top wines are aged in old Slavonian casks for up to two years before bottling. The emphasis here is on chiselled Nebbiolo tannins, making this trio showstoppers with food for the big day, with bright acidity as well as characteristic ripe red fruit and savoury layers.
