German-inflected Alsace is a white wine specialist, but across a diverse range of varieties. Riesling, pinot gris, gewurztraminer and muscat are all entitled to Grand Cru status, and these wines can be some of France's most rich, compelling and long-ageing. Outside the top wines, many good varietal wines are made, and blends – often labelled Gentil or Edelzwicker – show that Alsace isn't just a mono-varietal pony.
