Vignobles André Lurton, Bordeaux

It is 30 years since André Lurton pioneered the creation of the Pessac-Leognan appellation in 1987. Originally part of the wider Graves AOC, Pessac is notable for the depth of its gravel soils and the enhanced drainage it affords the vines.  The home of the first growths, Château Haut Brion, Pessac is the only region of Bordeaux to excel in both red and white wines.

Vignobles André Lurton is a major producer of Entre-Deux-Mers and Pessac-Léognan and one of the most important groups in the Bordeaux region.  Since inheriting Château Bonnet in Entre-Deux-Mers in 1953, André Lurton carefully developed the estate, bringing it to prominence with the purchase of Château La Louvière in 1965.  André Lurton’s innovative approach was instrumental in the decision to use screwcap for their best white wines as early as 2003.  Although the project had to be abandoned due to resistance from both domestic and key export markets, there remains a legacy of wines available direct from the cellar in pristine condition.

We are especially excited to introduce an extraordinary back catalogue of vintages of the white wines from Château La Louvière and Château Couhins-Lurton to buyers for the first time, with many available in larger formats, and all sealed with screwcap. These are exceptional, gastronomic wines that have been over-looked for too long.  Following a landmark tasting of these wines in London in June 2017 there were enthusiastic write ups from Jancis Robinson for the FT and and Neal Martin for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

“Lurton is Bordeaux's dry-white-wine king, and a total devotee of Sauvignon Blanc, eschewing Bordeaux's other white wine grape Sémillon in all his Pessac-Léognans. With its particularly obvious acidity and piercing aroma, Sauvignon Blanc is good at standing up to Bordeaux's warming summers, but I have a certain tendresse for the distinctive, waxy, fuller bodied character of Sémillon that is blended with Sauvignon Blanc in most other Pessac-Léognans.” Jancis Robinson

“The inflation in white Burgundy has put white Bordeaux's value for money in even sharper relief” Neil Martin
