Our selection of wines that have stood the test of time, have bags of personality, and are versatile enough for all times of the week.
Sparkling wines, whether Champagne or otherwise, have a special kind of magic that never fails to enchant, elevating any get-together, any occasion.
Nathalie Vignier is the 10th generation of grape growers in the Champagne region, and the 6th in the grand cru village of Cramant. When Nathalie and her brother Jean took over they were able to enlarge the vineyard to 16.5 hectares and together they started a mission to understand their terroirs and express them in a series of limited edition cuvées faithful to their origins.
The whole range is blanc de blancs from Chardonnay using first press juice only, long ageing, and with little or no dosage.
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
This trio of white wines captures the spirit of the seaside as they were all born by water and carry with them the tang of coastal air. Freshness above all and an appetising dryness unite all three.
The refined, mineral Sauvignons of the Loire Valley never go out of fashion, and the best producers treat their vineyards like gardens, cultivating without chemicals, and fermenting their wines with the native yeasts found on the skins.
These wines don’t just talk, they sing.
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From J R R Tolkien The Fellowship of the Ring
Whether from Burgundy, the Rhône, or Roussillon, this trio of our favourite richer white wines have balance and purity alongside their fuller textures, and generous flavours.
Born in Champagne, Anne-Sophie trained in Volnay (Burgundy) before seizing the opportunity to take over 8 hectares of vines in Fleurie.
The vines are in one single parcel at the notably high altitude of 400m in a wonderful amphitheatre on pink granite soils. She immediately began the 10-year transition to organic farming in this steep and demanding terroir. The benefits are being felt year on year as she works towards her goal of elegance, purity, and length of flavour.
These are some of the most perfumed and seductive wines from Fleurie, they never lack substance while remaining ethereal, graceful and brimming with energy. This is the perfect opportunity to taste all three cuvées side by side over the holidays.
City of wine, Bordeaux, takes pride of place at the meeting point of two great rivers, the Dordogne and the Garonne. On either side of the broad estuary vines hold sway, whether on the gravels of the Médoc, or the limestone of St Emilion, delivering the very essence of comfort and dependability in the colder months.
We have a small quantity of exciting Nebbiolo that we have to share with you - a dream gift for fans of perfumed and ethereal reds, and a lovely match for turkey or goose on the festive table.
Daniele Dinoia and his wife, Sonia, of Villa Guelpa are trailblazers in Alto Piemonte, Piedmont’s most northerly, subalpine region. The organically farmed vineyards are planted with regional clones of Nebbiolo, along with local specialties Vespolina and Croatina.
As a result, the wines are quite distinct from their cousins in Barolo and the Langhe further south, and well worth checking out. Fermented with natural yeasts in concrete, the top wines are aged in old Slavonian casks for up to two years before bottling.
The emphasis here is on chiselled Nebbiolo tannins, making this trio showstoppers with food for the big day, with bright acidity as well as characteristic ripe red fruit and savoury layers.
Life’s little luxuries, like that special box of chocolates, are the essence of winter comforts around Christmas. These opulent reds are the equivalent of a cashmere jumper and a wool overcoat, their flavours wrapping their warmth around you, soothing the season’s chill with stories of warmer climes.
This box of delights is all you need for the perfect festive day. A glass of fizz should not be missed while pottering around in your dressing gown. A frisky white is just right for lunch, and a buttery one an afternoon delight. Then a couple of reds you can’t do without will make your Christmas dinner bliss. Then something sweet is a pre-requisite for a peaceful night’s sleep. Christmas in a box!
