Austria has forged an enviable reputation for reliability and consistency in its wines. The country is particularly well known for its white wines from the native gruner veltliner grape variety, as well as good value dry rieslings. The signature red grape is spicy blaufrankisch, but don't overlook the fruity charms of zweigelt. The Wachau is the leading fine wine region for whites, with value to be found in neighbouring Krems and Kamptal, while Burgenland is the top red wine production area, with Styria in the south starting to become more well known.
