Germany's great white wines, based on the native Rhine Riesling, are one of the jewels in the crown of the wine world. Over the past three decades, these have been getting progressively drier, although there is still sublime joy to be found in the traditional Kabinett and Spatlese wines in a fruity style. From the Mosel to the Pfalz, Germany is the leading riesling producing nation bar none, but her reds from spatburgunder – a.k.a. Pinot noir – are improving and much sought after domestically.
