Zagreus
This estate was started in the late 1990s. In 2004 a new winery was built thanks to an injection of EU funds. As a result, there has been a marked improvement in the wines from vineyards east of Assenovgrad, long famous for mavrud, and more recently for cabernet sauvignon. The high iron content of the soils gives a richness and robustness to the wines which allows them to keep for longer than might be assumed. Zagreus cultivates 120 hectares planted with mavrud, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah and is certified organic. Vinica 2013 was voted best wine in Bulgaria and is an Amarone style mavrud. Family Reserve is a bottling of the best barrels of Vinica, and Noble is a sweet Recioto style mavrud perfect for chocolate.
