Schafer Frohlich Weissburgunder S 2020 Nahe
Weissburgunder, AKA Pinot Blanc, is a variety that few winemakers seem to fully explore the potential of usually in favour of regal Chardonnay, fashionable Aligote, or spicy Pinot Gris. Similarly to its contemporaries, Blanc is very much capable of thrilling terroir expression, and Tim Frohlichs S cuvee has the racy acidity, chalky lines of structure and pithy fruit to prove it. 50 year old vines on hard red slate form the core, with some gentle smoky reduction, and just a touch of creaminess from deft lees work. Brilliant evidence that Pinot Blanc amply rewards being treated with as much care and respect as more noble varieties.
