Biondi Cisterna Fuori 2019 Etna Sicily
The Biondi family have owned this land for generations, and current owners Ciro and Stef make superb, vineyard-driven wines with the help of several very large Great Danes. The Cisterna is one of their top single vineyard red wines, made with nerello mascalese planted near the top of the slopes on Etna's black volcanic sands, with an ancient stone cistern for gathering water forming a rough central point for the vineyard. This is a wine of finesse, typical of the wines made here on the southern side. It expresses a sense of cool, minerally freshness, crisp black and red fruit, a touch of pepper and gentle, but present, tannins. If you like good cru Beaujolais, Greek xinomavro or even the more slender style of cool-climate cabernet sauvignon, this will be right up your street. We can't recommend it highly enough.
