It’s the time of year to bring your tender stem plants into the safety of the greenhouse, which would also be a good place to enjoy this selection of dramatic white wines. No shrinking violets, these exotic blooms are the equivalent of reaching for a cashmere jumper, or an enveloping woollen coat.
It is a reminder how far white wine making has come. Beyond the rarified ranks of white Burgundy and new world chardonnay, or a few rare viogniers, much white wine languished in the aperitif category, hardly serious but a decent palate sharpener before the real show, a signature red. As red wines have become lighter and fresher, so white wines have grown muscle and stamina.
This selection will work across many meatier dishes, and can be enjoyed on their own with a good book, your favourite album on Spotify, and just a morsel or two of cheese.
